So hard to find a single "Mom memory!" It's just the warm and fuzzy feeling of childhood knowing that you were loved, secure, and well-taken care of. If I had to pick one it might possibly be baking with my mom; making chocolate chip cookies. She makes the best chocolate chip cookies ever, and I learn the secrets from her, and the love of baking was passed on to me and my sisters. The smell of chocolate chip cookies will always remind me of my mom, and bring a smile to me face!

We lived in a rural area with cows behind the house. One night my mother heard one of her five children calling for her, so she got out of bed to check on us, but we were all asleep. She returned to bed & started to drift asleep when she heard the call again. She got out of bed to check on us, but we were all fast asleep. She returned to her own bed and again heard, "Moammmmm" before she realized it was the cows mooing behind the house!

One of my favorite memories of my mother was when I was about 8 years old and by doctors orders I had to stay awake for 24 hours straight. My mom stayed up all night with me, and took turns with my dad keeping me entertained and awake while their energy quickly drained. I would play games, play with my toys, and draw in my notepads- pretty much a kid's dream- to stay up waaaaay past their bedtime. By the time morning rolled around my parents were both wiped out, and my mom was the "last man standing" who stayed up till morning with me, making sure I didn't nod off. By morning all of her energy has been drained, and all she wanted to do was sleep, and she was hoping I would do the same. When it was time to go to sleep, I turned to my mom who I'm sure was ready to pass out, and with excitement asked her "Can we do that again tomorrow night!?" Battered and beaten with a complete lack of sleep, she managed to laugh out a good "NO" and soon went to bed afterwards. For a brief evening my mom let me live out a child's dream, and a doctor's orders I GLADLY abided by.

I am one of three adult children of the best mother in the world. My favorite memory is when she told me that mothers usually always have a "favorite" child. "It's the one that needs me the most at any moment in time. So sometimes my favorite child changes daily."

When I was a kid my mom would improvise on the piano and my sisters and I would act out the story she would tell. "You are a fox in the forest . . . . You are a rabbit looking for food." The one I recall the most was "You are a leaf floating on the water." At this point my sisters and I would be lying on the floor waiving our arms and legs.

This story about my Mom is likely a bit different from the nostalgic memories
many daughters may post. A few years before she passed on n her '80's there was
an incident that shifted my entire relationship with her and changed my life
forever.
I was visiting Mom along with my eldest daughter, when one day I threw myself on
the bed and sobbed my heart out. I explained to my daughter that I couldn't take
it any more the way Mom had to do over everything I had done, making me feel
incompetent and just plain wrong!
My wise daughter reminded me that for Nonnie there was only one right way to do
anything, and that was HER way. By showing me that way, Nonnie was doing the
most loving thing she could imagine.
The scales fell from my eyes as suddenly I got the love that was expressed throughout
a lifetime of being criticized and corrected. In the few remaining years we had
together, I was able to accept my mother's love in the special way she knew to
express it. I am so grateful for this lesson, which has served me in countless
relationships and situations in my nearly 4 decades of life.
since, and I am so grateful for it.
